New York's Secret Paradise
Located just off the South Shore of Long Island, a little bit of paradise remains a secret to most New Yorkers…Fire Island. Perfect for a Labor Day weekend day trip, it’s about an hour drive or LIRR ride from NYC (longer from towns further East), and a 30-minute ferry ride leaving from Bay Shore, Sayville, or Patchogue. Once you’re on the ferry, it feels like you are thousands of miles away from the city. The Fire Island towns are delightful (no cars), the beaches are wonderfully clean and not usually that crowded.
Explore the quaint village of Ocean Beach, where you can find bars, restaurants, and shops. You can also enjoy the day-tripper town beach, Atlantique, which includes public restrooms, a snack shack, and a large marina.
Travel towards the East and you will find The Pines and Cherry Grove, both of which feature numerous restaurants and nightlife. Head to Sunken Forest and explore a 50-acre tract of beach, dunes, and trails under a canopy of various trees, some over 300 years old.
