ImmersIve illusion & puzzle-solving performance
Moving from event to event, seeing all kinds of performances, day in and day out, keeps us pretty sharp. And sometimes we feel like we’ve seen it all. That’s when LVSTER drops something like The Enigmatist on us. See, we went to Derek DelGaudio’s “IN & OF ITSELF,” a crazy good blend of illusion and storytelling, and we were bummed when it ended its run.
AT-A-GLANCE: THE FUNDAMENTALS
Lucky for us, and for you, David Kwong’s participatory illusion-weaving, puzzle-solving, story-telling masterpiece is in the middle of its run at the High Line Hotel.
Now, like you, we’ve seen countless sleight-of-hand street magicians, card tricksters, stuffed suits sawing girls in half, mentalists, escape artists and stuntfolk. After a certain age, it can feel like a been-there-done-that kind of thing.
David Kwong’s got us feeling like we’ve been-there-and-now-we’ve-seen-everything. You walk in, you get handed a few puzzles, which is how you’ll become part of the performance. From there, all we can tell you is that the guy — who, also, by the way, creates crosswords for the New York Times — takes enigmas, little mysteries, ciphers, games and codes, and crafts an amazing story out of all of it.
If you’re into any kind of performance that leaves you scratching your head later that night and most of the next day, asking yourself how that all happened right in front of you, you’ve got to see this.
“An immersive evening of puzzles, Cryptology and illusions from a renowned magician and New York Times crossword constructor. David Kwong is a magician and cruciverbalist (crossword constructor) who mixes puzzles and prestidigitation. Kwong was the head magic consultant on the worldwide hit film Now You See Me and is the secret code consultant for NBC’s “Blindspot.” A TED Talk favorite, Kwong recently published Spellbound: Seven Principles of Illusion (HarperCollins), which breaks down the neuroscience of how your brain is fooled.”
“…An evening of cryptic pleasures at The High Line Hotel.” — Time Out New York
“The last few minutes of The Enigmatist were 🤯(mind-blowing).” — EscapeRoomArtist
“Sometimes you come across a magic performance that is so very unusual that it reminds you of the vitality of the art. …A performance unlike any I’ve encountered…” — ThrowingCards
“Hands down one of the best/most unique live experiences I have had in a very long time. Nerd-everything at its very very best.” — Michelle, on T.O.N.Y.
“He brings the audience into this immersive show like no other – prepare for a really unique experience…” — Rupal, on T.O.N.Y.
It’s like a magic show, but it’s not. It’s like a puzzle-solving stage mystery, but it’s not. It’s incredible story-telling, illusion, and immersion, but it’s so much more. The Enigmatist is the best kind of head-scratcher, your entry to the world of the seemingly impossible, and the absolutely wonderful.
